Cleaning Area Rugs the Right Way (Without Ruining Them)

Area rugs and oriental rugs need different care than wall-to-wall carpet. Here's how to clean them safely, and when to leave it to a pro.

Cleaning Area Rugs the Right Way (Without Ruining Them)

A good area rug pulls a room together, and the nice ones aren't cheap. Which is exactly why so many people are nervous about cleaning them. Use the wrong approach and you can fade the colors, shrink the fibers, or leave the rug smelling worse than when you started. Rugs aren't the same as the wall-to-wall carpet in your hallway, and they shouldn't be treated like it.

Here's how to keep your rugs looking good between professional cleanings, and how to tell when it's time to bring in help.

Know what you're working with

Before you do anything, figure out what your rug is made of. It changes everything.

  • Wool is durable and naturally resists dirt, but it's sensitive to harsh chemicals and hot water, both of which can damage the fibers or set a stain.
  • Silk is delicate and best left to a professional almost every time.
  • Cotton and synthetics are more forgiving and can usually handle gentle cleaning at home.

If your rug has a tag, check it. If it's an antique, an oriental rug, or something you'd be heartbroken to ruin, that's your sign to stop and call a pro before experimenting on it.

Regular upkeep you can do at home

Most rug care is just consistent maintenance, and it makes a real difference.

  1. Vacuum regularly, but gently. Skip the beater bar on wool and fringe. It can pull fibers loose and chew up the edges. Use suction only.
  2. Rotate the rug every few months. This evens out wear and sun fading so one side doesn't age faster than the other.
  3. Shake out smaller rugs. Taking a smaller rug outside and shaking it gets out the loose grit that grinds away at the fibers over time.
  4. Treat spills fast and gently. Blot with a clean cloth, never rub, and test any cleaner on a hidden corner first to make sure it won't bleed the dye.

What you want to avoid is soaking the rug or scrubbing hard. Both do more harm than good, and a saturated rug that can't dry properly will start to smell, especially in our humid weather.

When to call a professional

Home upkeep handles the day to day, but it can't replace a real deep cleaning. Over the years, dirt settles into the base of the rug where vacuuming never reaches, and that's what wears it out from the inside.

Valuable, antique, or oriental rugs really should be cleaned by someone who knows how to handle them. The wrong water temperature or cleaning agent can ruin a rug that would otherwise last for generations. Our oriental rug cleaning is built specifically for delicate and high-value rugs, with a gentle process that protects the fibers and the dyes. For everyday wool and synthetic rugs, our area rug cleaning gives them a thorough, low-moisture clean that dries fast and won't leave them musty.

Treat the nice ones like they're nice

Your rugs will reward a little care. Vacuum them gently, rotate them, jump on spills, and don't drown them. And when they need a deeper clean than you can safely give at home, let someone handle them who won't take chances with a rug you love.
